Beemster cheeses come from the pastures of North Holland where the cows have grazed freely since 1612. The reputation of this region for exceptional cheesemaking comes from its terroir of blue sea clay, which gives birth to sweet milk and a smooth and creamy texture.
Vlaskaas is a sweet and creamy Gouda, made from an old world recipe. Originally Vlaskaas was made to celebrate the flax harvest and enjoyed throughout the harvest festival, enjoyed on thick slices of bread. The name even means “flax cheese”. In 2004, Beemster re-discovered the recipe and brought back this delicious, and now award-winning, cheese. We recommend enjoying this lost working mans cheese with a glass of Beaujolais or crisp Belgium Ale.
Beemster cheeses are made by a farmers co-op in The Netherlands that has been making delicious tasting cheeses for over a century. Their cheeses are handcrafted and use generations-old methods.
This cheese is best enjoyed on artisan bread alongside fresh fruits like grapes and pears. It can also be grated and enjoyed over pastas and warm veggies.
